Can I camp anywhere in UK?

At the end of summer I'm going to Scotland for a trip. I realised that I will have to pay around 50 pounds per night in a hotel, which is quite expensive for me- student. My idea is to buy a tent and camp somewhere. I'm wondering is it legal in UK to f.e. sleep by the Loch Ness lake in a tent. I don't want to make campfire I just want to have a place to sleep,

You have to camp on a proper campsite, because sleeping anywhere is illegal and unsafe.

The legal situation is different in Scotland than it is in England and Wales.

In England and Wales, there is no legal right to camp 'wild' and, strictly speaking, permission should be sought. But this can be impractical.

However, in high mountain areas, and in most other hill land, wild camping is generally accepted above the intake walls, providing it is for a limited time and its fairly discreet - out of sight of houses/farms.

There's always a slim chance that you'd be asked to move on.

In Scotland, the current access legislation - (early 2005) - is explicit about people's right to camp wild on hill land - usually more than 100 metres away from a public road - although you'd probably want to be much further away than that!

legally no, not anywhere but if you are discreet who's to know.If some fat greedy farmer catches you just plead ignorance. There are plenty of campsites in tourist areas,so I wouldn't worry about finding somewhere
