Can I buy the T-Mobile MyTouch off of ebay and then just change my plan?

I was looking for another phone and I think I want the MyTouch phone. I am not able to upgrade my phone or even just buy the phone from T-Mobile because it is not apart of my options. So I'm curious, can I buy a phone off of ebay and just change the plan I have to accomodate the data plan? Will it still work?
