Can I Buy the iPhone 3G Without a Contract?

I think I can, but I am not sure. I know its 199.99 with a contract, but could you better explain it?

I have a SIM card currently, that is 3G, and I am already on a contract. I cannot upgrade anymore, and I want the iPhone 3G. Can I purchase it and just put my SIM card in it?
