Can I ask a guy to semi-formal?Or is it weird?

Im in grade 9, so this year is my first semi formal. I don't really know how this is supposed to go :S I want to ask this guy who I'm kinda friends with to go with me. But I also don't want to be the one asking. I feel weird asking. I like it when the guy asks.

How can I ask him?

And, if i dont go with him, I'll still have fun, and dance with plenty of people(mostly guys :P).

What should I do?
