Can Freshwater fish live in salt water, and can Saltwater fish live in freshwater?

If you can't answer my big question, could you at least tell me the difference (if there is any) in freshwater fish gills and saltwater fish gills? How exactly do gills work? How do they get the oxygen out of the water?
