can fish get brain damage from being out of water?

my fish hopped out of the tank and i do not know how long it was on the ground for. it was more then 10 minutes, thats all i know. i put it back in the tank and it was still alive, but swimming very weakly and strangely. i know if humans are without oxygen for a couple minutes they get brain damaged. can this happen in fish as well?
 
Probably, but I doubt your fish is going to survive much longer. Fish are very fragile and if it bumped its head on the floor when it landed, that's going to have some long-term effects on it.

Make sure you have a lid!
