Can fish actually drown?

I know they live in water and the rest of it before the sarcastic comments start rolling in. Is it possible for them to drown? Or is that based on how many fish are in the bowl?

There are many ways a fish can drown. Certain labyrinth fish like Bettas and Gouramis actually breath air (instead of getting it from the water). If they don't have access to atmospheric air, they can drown. Most other fish get their oxygen from dissolved oxygen in the water. In this case, stagnant ponds with little dissolved oxygen can drown a fish (or any other body of water without enough dissolved oxygen). Another way is if the water is so polluted with toxic materials (ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pollution), it can damage fishes' gills, leading to suffocation (in the water = drowning).

they need to be in water according to their natural enviroment because it contains certain percentages of oxygen nitrogen etc. they can drown on land because its too much oxygen like if someone drowns in water its too much H20.

yes, they can drown, because they live by absorbing the oxygen in the water with their gills, without the oxygen, or in a low oxygen place, i beleive that they would drown, but i don't know for sure, i just suspect as much. Its like this, if people are in a room that we can't breath well in, cause theres no good fresh air, and we've pretty much breathed all the good air, all the oxygen and stuff, then we would suffocate, so in water, if the waters low on oxygen, the fish would drown. I dunno if it would be called drowning, but yeah.
