Can data functions be disabled?

For reasons too involved to go into here, I'd like to have an Android phone that can be used for standard voice and texting functions, but that would not use the cell network for data operations; data (Internet) access would only be available if connected thru WiFi.

This is probably device-dependent if possible at all, but is there any way to set a preference to disable the cellular data access (3G?) features of an Android phone?

You can disable 3G in the settings on all Android phones, but it will fall back to using 2G data.

There is a better way, however. Download APNdroid from the Market and run it. It will disable all of our APNs (they're what the phone uses to access mobile data). If you want them to work again you just run the app again.

When the APNs are disabled, the phone will only be able to use WiFi for data, and will not be able to use any form of mobile data (i.e. 2G, 3G, Edge, HSDPA, etc). If you don't want it to do that, just turn WiFi off too.

Theoretically phones allow you to shut off data reception. But, some do not work as apps will turn on data as they need it. Which blows, of course. I use APNdroid which rewrites (and restores) your APNs so data cannot be had. Retains text, voice and wifi. It's on the market. I use it all the time when over-seas.

The 3G network, 2G network(such as Edge) and Wifi could be disabled or enabled seperately.

In my HTC G2, Just go into the setting panel, find the connection settings, then there're several options to identify the three kind of network. So, just press the options to switch between enabled and disabled.

i use the switchpro widget to control it and have a bunch of buttons setup to toggle wifi, 3G data, syncing, bluetooth etc etc.
