can authors...do the following?

when you published a book can you chose the price of the books, cause hard back books are so darn expensive. so i was wondoring if i could (when i publish) price the books. or do the bookstores/stores do it.

If you go the traditional route of sending your book to a publishing house, they will set a wholesale price (what the book stores pay) and a suggested retail price (what customers pay) for the book.

The book store can charge whatever they want. An independent bookstore will probably charge the suggested retail price. A chain store may mark it down.

But -- you are usually allowed to buy your own books from the publisher at a discount (usually half price) and you can sell them at whatever price you like.

If you self publish (you pay all the costs of publishing your book) then you can set your own price. But book stores generally won't carry a self-published book and reviewers won't review one, and you usually end up with a garage full of books you can't get rid of.

Sorry but you don't get to price the books..... If I'm correct however I think you can decide if you can get them in soft or hard cover. But the bookstores and publishing companies determine how much they will sell for. You do get a free copy however. =D

if you have your book published strictly on your dime (privately published) then you can do whatever you want as far as selling price, cover art, etc. .. . but if you go through a publisher they would do most of that for you but some publishing companies ask for the authors input and want them to be part of that process too! not very many puclishing companies are very nice about it though, usually they just want to do it themselves. . .I heard DAW is one of the best publishers to work for, thats where im sending my manuscript for my fantasy novel :P

Good luck if your writing
