can australian soldiers fight for brittan?

i have to write a short story for english and in the story a guy comes home to australia from a war. it has to be set in the 1850s and it has to be an australian. there was the boer war in the 1850s when brittan invaded africa so im wondering if there is anyway that an australian soldier could fight for brittan. it has to be factual and based on real things so yeah any ideas
