I imagine that army ants behave in a very similar way to ancient human armies. (i.e. Roman legions) For what I know, they may even have tacticians.
Either way, I know that other types of ants will abandon their posts and flee if they are scared. I also know that human armies of large size are capable of panicking and being routed.
Can army ants be routed? For example, if they encountered a situation where the ants suffered heavy losses (i.e. a human soldier with a machine gun) is it possible for them to rout and flee? (another example would be if the human simply lit one of the closely packed columns on fire.)
