Can anyone shed any light on this?

I can't really go to the doctor with this as he'll just laugh it off probably.

When I sit and have my hands in my lap it sometimes feels like my hand is elsewhere. Sometimes it feels like my hand has dropped to the side of my body or that I've even moved it behind my body. But when I look down my hand is still firmly in my lap. It's irritating. It sometimes happens when I'm holding something. It feels like my hand's loosening around what I'm holding and like I'm about to drop it, but my fingers are still clasped tightly around the object when I check.

I've asked about this before on a busy forum and no-one had ever had this experience or even heard anyone else complaining about it. Needless to say, they presumed I was just having a laugh.

Thanks for any help.

this is actually having to do with whats called "prioperception'. its not something i really was even aware of til my spinal cord damage occured and i lost it in my legs. i also have that same arm crap happen with every single migrane i get. its part of my pre migrane 'aura"? a bunch of really wierd eye crap always comes, along with the arm on the oppsite side of the headache will become like "disattached"? from my body.it just 'looks' to me like someone else has their arm inside my shirtsleeve kind of thing? am i hitting on what you are feeling here at all? you have a certain 'loss' of prioperception. do some research on prioperception,it will explain it much better than i can. but it is very hard for other people who have never felt this to really even have a clue what you are talking about, let alone actually feeling. no one understood this from me when i got my very first migrane at age 13 and scared out of my freaking mind. just curious here as to what happens when you have this occuring and you simply close your eyes? does it feel like the arms are kinda 'gone'?

our ability to actually recognize our own body parts in relation to space is actually something that is governed at the brain and the spinal cord level. never had a clue,it just seems like this just always 'was' or is,ya know what i mean? i would talk to your doc about getting referred to a neurologist,AFTER you do just a bit of research on prio and how to actually explain it to him or her. it helps believe me. at least you now know what it is called, lol. i KNOW thats a relief for you.

in the brain,it is in the cerebellum that governs our ability to reckognize our own body parts as ours. in the spinal cord it is called the spinocerebellar tract. the thing about the cerebellum is that this also governs balance and certain eye functions too. ya know when a cop is doing all those tests to check for sobriety? they are actually checking prioperception since the cerebellum is the area that gets "put to sleep" when we drink alcohol,so those tests really can reveal alot.

telling your doc about what feels like a loss of prioperception,he will at least(hopefully) know what you are talking about now. you can also print off any real good info from your searches and bring that to him to and just say, this is what i am feeling, then show him the info. this could be a connection issue within the brain itself,or a problem within the spinal area too. it would take something like an MRI done on both the brain and the c spine at least to just really 'see' what could be causing this loss.

that,in a nutshell is what you have or are dealing with, loss of some prioperception with your arms. now it just needs to be tracked back to why and where it is being affected. hope this helped. please keep me posted,K? good luck, FB

This sounds like some sort of pinched nerve and not uncommon so I think you have reason to be concerned and I wouldn't hesitate to go.
