Can anyone recommend a good beginner's book on photography?

I'm interested in picking up photography as a hobby. I'm in nursing school right now so I won't have the time or the resources to take a class on intro. photography. I'm interested in both digital and film, but definitely film (overall). Can any of you art teachers or seasoned photographers recommend any "how-to" type books aimed at neophyte hobbyists? I'm interested in traditional wildlife and nature photography and plan to do a lot of shooting out of doors.

This is not exactly a book, but it's a good start. I have seen good books at the library, as well. No need to spend more money buying any more books.

Stay in Nursing school. You will be far more appreciated and in demand.

I suggest Ansel Adam's "The Negative". Covers all the basics of exposure. And, yes, much of it will apply to a sensor.

Have fun and heal people.
