Can anyone help with an assignment about the book "when the war began"?

I need to write a 600 word essay about the Hermit. I don't really want to make him the murderer (of his wife and child) so was thinking about bringing in another character, like an ex of his wife's that kills them and starts the fire.
what do you think?
Or any other ideas?

oops, sorry the book is actually called "Tomorrow when the war began" by John Marsden.
