I just got a new fish tank, the one i had before didnt have a filter....

How should the filter be positioned? How do I know if its in the right place?
Should I switch off my filter when feeding my fish?
Should the filter be left on all night?
Also what is the point of gravel in a tank? (apart from appearance)

Also any other fish advice would be appreciated! (I have 4 goldfish)

If its a hanging filter, I always put mine in the center of the back. Only turn the filter off when cleaning the filter. Golds are dirty fish and you will probably have to clean the filter more often then with tropics. Gravel in the tank is partly looks but it can help with making the tank "right" Waste and stuff gets down there and breaks down. You can keep fish without gravel.
With golds, don't overfeed! They will aways act like their staving, but only fed them 1-2 times a day and what they can eat in a couple of mintues. As cooler water fish, be careful of the temp..they do better around 68 degrees. Don't put any tropics in there. Change about 25% of the water around 2-3 weeks. Be sure replacement water has been treated if needed. Good luck!
