What prevents thermonuclear reactions from occurring at the center of a white dwarf? If no thermonuclear reactions take place in its core, why doesn’t the star collapse?

A white dwarf has reached the end of the chain of possible nuclear reactions, and simply radiates its heat, until one day, it will no longer exist, and become a black dwarf. So far, no black dwarf stars have been detected. It is thought that it takes longer than 14 billion years to create one. This is longer than the estimated age of the universe.
