In June 1982 (Isreal) invaded Lebanon, seeking to suppress once and for all the guerilla bases from which palestinian fighters harassed beleaguered Isreal. The Palestinian fighters were bloodily subdued, but Lebanon, already pulverized by years of episodic civil war, plunged into armed chaos.

Can anyone explain what this means in simpliet terms

Israel invaded Lebanon in a preemptive strike (is waged in an attempt to repel or defeat a perceived inevitable offensive or invasion, or to gain a strategic advantage in an impending (allegedly unavoidable) war. to stop Palestinian fighters by closing the guerrilla bases where the fighters were based. In a bloody battle the Palestinians were beaten, but Lebanon was almost destroyed by the periodic fighting that had been going on for years.

You see, Lebanon before the wars with Israel was the Riviera of the East and quite a tourist destination. After the Arab - Israeli conflict, it lost most of its standing. And it was first in Lebanon that the suicide bombing started. Intifada, it was called.

People from Lebanon were attacking Israel constantly and Israel got sick of it. So Israel made a very serious attack on Lebanon in order to weaken them to the point where Lebanon could not attack them anymore. At this point, Lebanon people, who had been fighting amongst themselves for many years, starting fighting with each other even more.
