Can anybody give me a brief overview of CGI?

Howdy,

I got into film-making a couple of years ago and started using After Effects not long after for basic compositing. I've never really considered the use of CGI, so I don't really understand how it works and was wondering if somebody could give me a brief overview...

I've seen hundreds of images where somebody has created an object in a 3D progrm, but what I'm curious about is how this would be animated and added to the final film. Are the objects created AND animated in the same software or is there some kind of additional software that does the animating. When the animation is complete can it then just be imported into After Effects for compositing? Does After Effects recognise whatever files are output from 3D software?

I appreciate that learning how to model objects in 3D would take me months and learning how to model realistic objects in 3D would probably take me several years, but say somebody created the object for me and provided me with the file. Would it then be relatively simple to animate?

Sorry for all the questions, but if anybody can give me a bit of advice then I'd be very grateful!
Thanks!
