Can anybody explain the weird green flash I saw in the sky the other night?

There was a green flash in the distance. It was pretty noticeable. I actually thought my city had just got bombed on. After about a minute nothing else happened. Someone told me that what I saw was an electrical transformer exploding, but I thought there would have been a loud boom or something. Has anyone actually seen a transformer explode? What happens?

it probly was a shooting star i've seen one before and it was a green-ish color. i have seen a transformer blow up and it makes a LOUD noise!

I saw a transformer explode about 100 feet from me. There was a huge blue flash and it was completely silent.
