Can any tell true the history of "Handfasting?"?

It wasn't what it tis now.
It is not of Wicca because it is much older. It can be spoken of as Pagan, but there a multitude of belief structures labelled Pagan.
This is a Folklore specific
question.
 
I always thought it was an ancient pagan/wiccan ritual where they would tie 2 peoples hands together as a symbol binding the 2 together much like modern day marriage is supposed to today, but they had to be tied together for so long to prove they can tolerate eachother and truly want to be together forever. that's just what i've heard...
