Hello, I was wondering if anyone experienced with having a book published traditionally can please help me.

I'm trying to figure out how to accurately count the pages of my manuscript.

I've read around that it's 250 words per page, but for my book it varies a lot from page to page - and then I have the chapter starts which begin halfway down the page

(do those count as a full page to agents/publishing companies?)

When I do the forumula PAGE NUMBER divided by 250 I get a lot less pages than I truly have typed.

Do agents/publishers go by the formula above...or by what I actually have typed - taking into consideration the beginnings of each chapter and counting those as a full page.

Any help is very greatly appreciated! :)
 
Two hundred and fifty comes from a particular formatting set up. If the work is typed in New Times Roman 12 pica or Courier 12, with 1 inch margins all around, double spaced with 10 words a line and 25 lines a page you get 250 words a page.
However now with 'word counters' in most writing programs you can actually get a more accurate figure. Word counters aren't dependant on any sort of universal set up. You can single space a document at 8 pica and in the end it will still give you the same number of words if you type at 12 pica double space. It doesn't take into consideration if you've only typed on half a page or an entire page.
But if you are working by hand then a page is estimated to be 250 words you add or subtract depending on your style of writing and the size of your handwriting and half pages.
