Can an unlocked Nexus One function properly without a SIM card?

I really want to get a Nexus One to use kind of as a fun device that I can root and use as a fun device, since I have a Droid X and don't want to void the warranty on my cell phone. I would want to use it as a WiFi only device, and so I was wondering if the phone would still work without an activated SIM card. I do also have a deactivated AT&T SIM, if that would work. Also, it would be really helpful if someone could send me a few links to cheap sources for new or mint condition Nexus Ones.
