Can an extremely large, open wound heal without sutures?

My dog recently had a surgery to remove a remarkably large (4lb) lump from his rear thigh. The skin in this area was mostly dead and had to be removed. The remaining skin had to be pulled extremely tot, and when we got our dog back, a few days later the sutures opened.

The vet told us there just wasn't enough skin to sew together, but that the wound would heal naturally given enough time. Just for clarification, I'm talking about a 3 inch diameter hole, no skin. So we're boarding the dog at the vets for them to take care of him. Our dog is very well behaved though, he doesn't bite at it or even flinch when applying creams to it, I don't think he is bothered too badly by it.

I'm asking because I don't particularly trust our vet, he's old and has made mistakes with our previous dog. Thanks so much!
