It does seem like you had your rights violated. School isn't always fair and somehow they always find exceptions to these rules. Unfortunately the school is allowed to do this in most areas.
Yes while on school property you, your backpack, and your vehicle are subject to search at any time for any reason. Doesn't matter what they are looking for, or even if they are looking for anything specific.
I was in my prob. and statistics class and one kid stole a calculator(kind of). He got a graphing calculator and taped it under the a cabinet in the back of the class. Towards the end of the class the teacher found out she was missing a calculator and she said she was going to call the office. No one was allowed to leave. A security came and told us to whoever stole it to turn it in no questions asked. Everyone was silent. He then called the principal. At the time I had no idea it was taped to a cabinet. So far it was intersting and I got to miss 7th period. The principal came and told us that we were going to have our backpacks searched before we leave. It was my turn and I said I didn't want to have my backpack searched. She said I would go to the office and have it searched there. I said you can not search it wheter in class or the office. I was thinking she can't search it because they were looking for a calculator not drugs or guns. She gave me one last warning and i said no. I was getting a thrill from doing this. Then she said i had a SaTURDAY SChool for refusing . and the security took the backpack and searched it anyway. They felt stupid when they found nothing and started giving me some talk about letting them search it in the first place(they started to feel bad about it). I told them I was not going to serve the Saturday and that I would bring my parents in. Suprisingly they called me in the next day and said I didn't have to serve my saturday.
IAM A SENIOR IN HIGH SCHOOl. I read a court case in which the final ruling was a student has the same rights as an adult even at school. And i understand a search for drugs or weapons but this was a calculator.
Was it RIGHT for them to Search My backpack?
Yes, they can. The Supreme court ruled that the school has roughly the same authority as your parents (in loco parentis). That's why they can search your stuff (on campus or at a school event) and restrict your speech.

If you were on school grounds you are subject to search. That is the problem when you haven't yet completed your education. You make the assumption you are smart, when in fact you are just uninformed.
Good job !
You are right, you have the same rights to unlawful search and seizure as adults do. They had no right to violate your space unless they suspected you were going to harm another student.
