Can an active d.i box give me distortion on a guitar or do i need a pedal/stompbox?

I have an active d.i box but I dont know what its for, and i was wondering if i could use it to get distortion instead of buying a stompbox/pedal.Is this possible? and what is a d.i box actually for?
