Can a worn serpentine belt in a 2005 Toyota Corolla cause the CEL to come on?

My serpentine belt has needed replacing for awhile, but the check engine light just came on today. Is it possible that the light is caused by the belt finally being on its last legs?

WARNING TO TOYOTA DRIVERS
If your car decides to accelerate on it's own, do NOT apply the brakes, you will burn them out.
Instead, shift into neutral, disengaging the engine. THEN apply the brakes. After, SHUT THE CAR OFF.

DO NOT shut the car off while driving, you will disable your vacuum assisted breaks and make the car harder to stop.
