Can a wool coat get wet?

I recently bought a wool coat for the cold weather. The occasional mist and slight sprinkle makes me worry as to whether it will harm my coat and keeps me from wearing it at times. I was wondering if anyone knows how water would affect the wool coat. I have heard that getting it wet wont damage it, but drying it will. So does this mean I can wear it out even in a heavy downpour? (not that i intent to go swimming in it or anything) and if so, how would i go about drying it after it is wet? I appreciate any advice.
