Can a SD or XD card be mailed and images not be harmed or deleted?

My son and first grandchild live 1000 miles away and have no computer. I bought them a digital camera and am having trouble getting pictures. He has sent a few through the library, but it changes the pic's to word processor so I can't develop them by normal methods or fix and crop them. I was wondering if a SD card can be mailed and images not be harmed? That way I can download them and send them the card back. He lives in boonies so there is no major shopping store near by except Wal-mart which requires him to pay for developing of all pic's prior to being able to share them with others. Grandparents have the funds lol and in need of pic's. Kid is living payday to payday buying diapers. Pic's are his last concern.

I was thinking of having 3 cards, 1 in camera, 1 comming here and one being returned. Kinda a netflix idea lol. Shipped in a hard case in small postal box.
 
Yes, just as long as it does not get cracked. Put some bubble wrap around it when you mail it. Or USPS has those special shipping envelopes with bubble wrap in them already, and everything will be fine!
