i have been told only certain versions or sizes can play the playstation 2 games, and im wishing to trade my ps2 with some money for a ps3 console that is able to play the new ps3 games as well as all my old ones.....

The previous answers are all partially correct. The 20 and 60 GB models have full PS2 compatibility. The 80 GB with four USB ports will play around 80% of PS2 games. The 40 and the 80 with only two USB ports and the soon to be released 160GB models will not play any PS2 games.

yeah but it wont look as good as playing it on a ps2 and it might freeze a bit somtimes but yeah u can play them

It depends on the model that you have.

PS3 40gig: does not support backwards compatibility for PS2 games. However it does play PS1 games fine.

PS3 60 gig and 80gig: does support PS2 games through software emulation.

In short. Yes, only the 60 and 80 gb models will let you play PS2 games.

Not if you get a new one. All new PS3 consoles cannot play PS2 games. That includes the 80GB model.
