It can. Check with Nikon 800.NIKON-UX for the limits on trigger flash voltages. If the trigger voltages are under the maximum allowed by Nikon, then you can use a hot shoe/PC adapter. Here is the Nikon version of such an adapter.

Usually in the studio, we use a wireless trigger like Pocket Wizard to fire the flash units, one to thirty or more. That way we are not tethered to a power supply.
