I know they are cold water fish. I have a lot of them in my pond.

But I read on a website Koi do best in 20c - 25c. and tropical tanks are 20c - 27c. So can a small koi live in my tropical tank? and as they get bigger, transfer them to my pond?
Bonnie, it will be heated.... to 25c..
its 65 gallons and I would have a 3 inch Koi
Thats true I should of said the reason - On the website it said warmer waters bring out brighter colours and improves health. and this one Koi I have is really nice to look at, so I was hoping I could mix him in with tropical fish.

Yes, they can live in a tank, but remember they are nothing more than oversized goldfish, just a fancier version. They will get large faster in a tank than out in a pond and some people deliberately put them in one to help them grow faster if they get them as small fish. It is also a safety feature I guess, to keep the little ones from being bothered or eaten.
Just watch the temperature that you keep the tank set at and have a good filter because they are dirty fish and you will need to keep the tank clean. You also need a good air pump.
We had 6 tanks and put koi in them for my husband's cousin while they were building their koi ponds. By the time the yard had been finished and the pond was ready the koi were ready to be transferred.
I understand that not all fish hobbyists would agree with this, it certainly worked for our family and they have been raising koi for over 60 years with really good results.

i love it when ppl dont read questions... it makes them look so dumb...

anyway... they can live there yes but be careful if you have other fish. koi eat anything that wont eat them first.

good luck

The rule is 1000l for ONE fish. So you need a very big tank indeed...

edit: Sorry, I didn't read she wants to transfer it into the pond when it's bigger. But anyway I think a Koi will feel much better with some company in a pond.
