subframe danerous? Took my partners car to garage for a service and MOT, had a call from mechanic to say that lots of jobs needed to be done including: Remove & Refit Track rod (one) outer standard, Remove and refit Spring/torsion bar (one) rear susp. and he told us that the rear sub frame had to be replaced as it was cracked. He wanted to charge us £750, we told him that we couldnt possibly raise that kind of money in a day, so he said he would book the car in for the following week to replace the subframe, and charged us £392.72, but when we collected the car he told us that he had run out of time to change the spring, even though he had charged us for it, he said that it would be easier to change the spring at the same time as the subframe. After chatting with people we have been told that the mechanic is trying to rip us off, and that the subframe could be welded, others have said he should not have let the car out of the garage as it could be dangerous, we dont know what to believe.... I'm not an expert on this subject, but I don't think it's recommended. If you attempt to fix it by welding, it's not going to have the same strength as a manufactured frame.
