Can a collection agency talk to someone else about my debt?

Today I got a call from a collection agency I was out walking the dogs so my boyfriend picked up the phone and he asked to take a message. Thinking she would just leave her name and number but instead and without my consent talked to my boyfriend about my debt, how much I owed and when I was expected to pay. I was shocked. Although he does know about my situation I thought that they were not allowed to talk about my debt and any other issues with anyone else except for me that is unless I have told them other wise in the past which I have not. Am I wrong to think this. Can they just blab all of my personal information with anyone they chose? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in Advance
