Can a blood donor service verify a person's sexuality?

Say a man donates blood to a service before he ever has sex with another man. They call him a few months later, asking if he will donate blood because they are in need of it. He informs them that he is (now openly) gay and no longer can. They call him the next day, and ask him to verify some of the information he gave them the previous night, saying that he disclosed to them information that indicates that he engages in "high risk behavior," because they say they need to make sure the "behavior" didn't start until after the first time he donated blood. Is said blood donor service allowed to do this, or is it completely out of line?
