Can a betta fish and a sucker fish live together?

I have a crown tail betta fish (Winston). We've had him since November of 2008. He is in a nice roomy filtered and heated 10 gallon tank. Would it be possible to introduce a sucker fish/algae eater, and for the two to live together alright?
Because the tank does not need a lot of cleaning it just develops algae every now and then. I could also feed the algae eater seperate food right?
