Can a baseball players be imprisoned for taking steroids or lying to reporters

about taking steroids? I am writing a novel called Homerun Hitter about a player trying to beat the record for homeruns in a season but he's taking steroids to pump up his muscles and tells reporters he's not but then suffers a heart attack at bat during a game. Do players face jail time for using steroids or is there just stigma attached to it because the guy didn't use his own strength and muscles and exercise to hit the ball so far and got a boost from illegal meds? Like I think Barry Bonds would have gone to prison if the court had ruled he was lying about taking any. I just wanted the story to be realistic. I was going to have the protagonist chase the Roger Maris record but I figured they weren't testing for steroids back in 1998 so I might just go with the Mark McGwire record instead and have him try to hit 80 homers in a season.
 
nope. it just hurts his integrity. if he lies underoath that's a different situation.
 
If there is no proof of taking the steroids then no. Lying to reporters is one thing and lying to congress is another thing. You could tell someone you stole something and if they didn't have anything to back it up then you wouldn't know. Besides, when most of the guys say they took steroids they say they it happened when it wasn't banned.

Players now could be takin to jail because it is against the law and MLB. If they shoot up in the US it is illegal. If they shoot up in Mexico and come to the US then its just against the MLB.

No, you can't, just like if you apply for a job and fail the drug test, you can't be improsioned. The only reason Bonds is facing possible jail time is because he lied in court, to the grand jury, and thats perjury.
 
not lying to reporters..but on the other hand if he pulled a roger clemens and lies in court...thats perjury and very bad
