A friend of mine has a 98 Escort wagon that has a problem with shredding the serpentine belt. The car is stuck about 75 miles from where he lives. If I bring a bunch of spare batteries, would it be safe for him to drive the car home? I believe the water pump is driven by the timing belt on the 2 liter SPI engine, so I think it would be ok that way.

You are right, the timing belt does drive the water pump. BUT. and this is a big but, don't use any accessories, lights, turn signals( if you can get away with it) radio, and AC. A fully charged batteries should get you 75 miles without a problem. Power steering might be a little stiff.

The idler or tensioner is bad and causing the belt to be thrown.

Good luck. ps the CHP is out in force this weekend.
