Can 50 mph winds blow trees down?

I live in the most southeastern town of Connecticut right on the RI border and Earl is heading up this way. It won't be a direct hit but we have a tropical storm warning through tomorrow night. They say we will get wind gust of 50+ mph.

We have a lot of trees around our house a couple are pretty close to the house and two are right near my children's bedrooms. My husband thinks I am over reacting but I was thinking of having the kids sleep downstairs in the basement playroom for tomorrow night. I just keep picturing a tree falling over onto the house right into their bedroom.

Is this being paranoid or is it a good idea?
How do you know if a tree is dead? I know the trees are old but my husband said they are stronger then because the roots are in deep and far out but I worry it could snap in the middle
