what are the laws surrounding camping in public woods? Is it allowed? if not are there places too camp which arn't proper camping sites that require you too pay?

you're not supposed to camp anywhere unless you pay, or you get permission. although it can be done in remote places such as the dorset coast path or welsh mountain areas. or as you say , maybe in the woods. be quiet, be tidy. dont do any damage and you may be ok if no one sees you. ive camped on the dorset coast path in a tiny tent and left early next morning and ive seen others do it.
theres no freedom left in this country. all you can do is be discreet and hope you get away with it. its a sad place we live in now but good luck with your camping. i hope you enjoy it

Anywhere that isn't a paying campsite (or public property that you have the expressed permission of the owner to use for camping) is illegal.

Have a look at the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000.

The law is different in Scotland where wild camping is permitted in some areas.
England and Wales expect you to use camp sites.
Sites vary from cheap farmers fields with minimal facilities to expensive sites with toilet/shower block, swimming pool and club house.
Some expensive sites can cost more than B&B.
Check out wild camping on the internet.

You can not just put your tent up anywhere. That is the Law! My advise: If you want to camp with mates or alone ask the owner of the land you want to camp on.
Farmers often don`t mind to let people stay on there land as long as no rubbish is left behind, if being asked first. I my opinion if you do it without permission then make sure nothing is left behind when you leave. So sorry it is not allowed to camp in public woods and there are no sites i know of where you can camp for free.
Cheers Erwin.
