Camping in northern Illinois or Southern Wisconsin. hike THEN camp?

I want to take my son camping, but don't want to drive into a spot and pitch a tent. The park sites at DNR are sooo hectic and complicated. Does anyone know of a camping place that I can hike into the woods maybe a quarter mile or so, then pitch a tent somewhere? I used to do that in the boyscouts but that was in Michigan. Ideas?
