Moving to san francisco area this summer...we're trying to find nice camping areas...
not necessarily in SF...

Try up in the Lake Almanor area. It is about 2 and half hours north-northeast of San Francisco. Beautiful area, lots of good fishing, and several camping grounds to choose from.

I spent every summer of my youth camping at Butt Lake, which is about ten miles from Lake Almanor.

Good luck to ya.

When I lived in Northern California we would always camp in Big Sur. The best place was Ventana Campground at http://ventanawildernesscampground.com/, but there are many other good ones also listed at: http://www.bigsurcalifornia.org/camping.html

If you go, make sure you get to the River Inn, buy a drink and sit in the chairs in the river in the back! http://bigsurriverinn.com/

Ventana Campground is located in Post Canyon. Post Canyon is a box canyon beginning at about 900 feet in elevation and oversees the Big Sur River valley to the North. This gorgeous box canyon is home to Post Creek, a small stream that runs through the redwood trees that tower over the campground. A lush second growth forest is filling in the lower canapy in places where turn of the century logging selectively harvested some of the old growth. The campsites are tastefully nestled among these trees and along the streams edge, offering several "private" and unique camping opportunities.

sf isn't that far from yosemite and if you go over interstate 80 truckee and the lake tahoe area are only about 185 mile/ 3hrs away
