Side arms a good choice, pick a magnum. You need to wear red flannel so you can be seen by the bear first, They usually are more afraid of you. Bells work good as well, sometimes the brush is very heavy and when we are hikeing quite often we don't talk so you don;t want to startle a bear. The bells and conversation will help give you away. Pepper spray is not as good as they say it is, you need to hit the bear in the face before he's charging you, once he/she is set on going after you pepper spray is kinda usless. Be alert more then anything watch for signs of bear ie rubbings tracks bear skat. By the way bear skat is easy to identify it will have bells and red flannel in it and smell of pepper spray.

Going camping in bear country. Which is going to be most effective when trying to keep a black bear from attacking you? Pepper Spray for bears, or Smith and Wesson semi-automatic bear repellent?

Well black bears arent usually aggressive, in comparison to Brown/Grizzly Bears, so I wouldnt worry about it. If you camp smart you probably wont even see one. Remember hang your smellables, not just your food, in the tree. Cook your food away from your sleeping area so any spillage wont attract them to your tent area. If you do see a bear dont panic, make noise- bang pots n pans blow a whistle yell, he`ll leave you alone. Let him know you`re there. However, if there are cubs make it known you are there so it can hear you but dont get too aggressive. I wouldnt worry though they`re pretty docile. If it`ll ease you mind go with the bear spray, but you wont need it.
