camping free.........?

if we went to france on holiday, could we just camp in the countryside, or would we have to stick to certified campsites? I mean, is it illegal?

Well, all land is owned by someone or a company, so you can't just turn up where you fancy & pitch a tent, as there's a good chance that the landowner will not appreciate it. It's trespassing.
