Camera good for river rafting and camping?

Im going to go river rafting and hiking in the mountains with NOLS but i need a camera that can handle it all. something water proof for the rafting but also something with good quality images and videos for when hiking. Im not looking for a 1,000$ camera but something good that's not too expensive in case it gets lost in the river or mountains.

I need it to be both video and picture camera so please help.
 
I use an old Canon SD 400 and a Canon waterproof case. I'm sure you can find a newer model and waterproof case that will fit your bill perfectly.
