I want to be able to take family portraits, take photos of sports, and friends. Also maybe make some money on the side. What kind of camera should i get? Iv been reading and thus far iv came across the Nikon D90, but its a little out of my price range. What are your opinions? Should i get a cheaper camera, stick with the D90, or get more money together to buy something better?

When looking at cameras, since you want to make money down the road the camera is not as important as the lenses.

When I started out, I bought an olympus e500 with 2 lens kits and an external flash.
It let me capture sports, etc.
From there I bought better lenses and then went to a higher end body.

The D90 is an excellent camera.
I don't like how the D3000 and 5000 don't work with all nikon glass and that in burst mode the popup flash is disabled.

I shoot olympus, but the same principle applies to all companies.
