Hey Guys,
I need a little help deciding on what to do. I AM IN A CROSS ROAD!
BACKGROUND: I am a 24 year old male who graduated from a division 1 cross-country/indoor/outdoor track program 2 years ago. (5k-16:00; 10k-33:00; mile-4:30) I work for a specialty running store (go figure). I also competed in nationals for USS swimming for about 12 years (in events such as 100m butterfly/back and 200IM)
PROBLEM: All my life I have been told by coaches, family members (of course), and some master elite runners/competitive athletes that I have the potential to become an ago group/elite triathlete....Yes, it all sounds good, but I am in a cross roads of what I want more and what I will regret and having a good life.
I tried my 1st sprint triathlon (1/2 mile swim, 16 mile bike ride, and 5k) called the SBR series in Harriman state park in NY. I did only 5 workouts in the pool, 2 weeks of running, and I got the bike the day before the race. I finished 115 out of about 400. I was 3rd out of the water with a time of 11min, 170 place on the bike of 58 mins, and 21 min for the 5K = 1:39:00.
I am doing the NYC triathlon and if I break 2:45:00 I will only be 30-40 mins off the top athletes in the world. It may seem a lot, but biking is my problem (people say I can take all that down with biking and transitions)....
PROBLEM PART 2: I love having a good time. I love going out to clubs til 4am drinking like 10 beers a night on the weekends with my friends on wall street and all. I am very easily persuaded. Even though I may do this, I still make sure I wake up and do my workouts at the pace they need to be. I sacrifice that sleep for it. I'm 100% IRISH. lol. BUT at the same time I also have dreams of making money such as being brand manger of NIKE or NEW BALANCE, but that also takes time and effort for years.
I feel that to become THAT athlete I know I have to sacrifice those good times and my wanting of a nice corporate job with connections and money and loads of fun.
BUT ....
I DO NOT want to look back and say "Hey I could be that athlete" when its toooo late or SEE that all the trainning/hard work/sweat/time and money and FAIL and now I lost out on all those great times of stories, parties, connections, and good friends....
I do not know if im scared of failure or sacrificing those great times with my friends across the nation, traveling, skiing, clubbing, and being an important corporate figure....
WHY IS IT SO HARD FOR ME???
