Calling a USA mobile from a UK mobile - cheaper ways?

I would like to make a phone call from my O2 UK mobile to a mobile in the States that runs with a US provider.

Any ideas on how to make the call cheaper and how much it will be if I can find no way of making it cheaper?

I have read about these calling cards/texts but they look dodgy and complicated.

Thanks for any help at all.
I forgot to mention i have to use a phone as that person doesn't have internet and well, you need both to use skype
