I am posting on behalf of my parents, they have a Bell TV 5900 receiver, and call display service from Bell. The problem is that if the phone call is a local call, it is displayed on the tv. However if it is a long distance call, it doesn't display at all. Their long distance calls do have a distinctive ring (1 long 2 short), which was put in place by Bell (My parents didn't have the choice) many years ago. Does anyone know of a solution for this problem?

Thanks

Are the long distance calls blocked ones from telemarketers, or calls from people they know?

I wonder if it can't show a number that's blocked.

Try rebooting the unit. If that doesn't work, you may need to call BTV. You could also temporarily hook up a phone with call display to see what happens on a phone, vs the STB?

Thanks, they do have a regular phone with call display and everything works on that. It has been rebooted several times, this has been the case since they got the unit, a few years ago.

I will call btv when i am there next

Perhaps the distinctive ring feature is not compatible with the STB? Can you ask Bell to cancel that to see if that's the issue? Can they live without distinctive ring since they have call display (these days knowing whether a call is long distance is a lot less important than it used to be, since most people don't "pay extra" for long distance, or it's very little)

They certainly can live without it. They never asked for it in the first place, it was imposed on them by Bell. I think that everyone in their exchange has that feature on their line. I will look into it further when i am at their place sometime in the future, until then they are just going to have to live with it. This issue comes up whenever they are at my place for a while and they see my longdistance calls show up as normal.

It's the STB. I had the same issue with both my 5900 and 9200 receivers. If I'm not mistaken, the distinctive ring can be turned off through the preference options in call answer.

***Just checked Bell's Website

Dial "*49", listen for a long beep.

Thanks everyone, A little research on the bell site, and I found out that *49 turns off the distinctive ring and now the call display is working properly

I had the same problem here in Manitoba.
I called Manitoba Allstream and had them switch off the distinctive ring feature permanently.

Instant success. Now we can screen the 8** numbers and watch TV uninterrupted.
