calf pain

Hi,

Hopefully someone can help me figure out this pain I'm having in my left calf. For the past 2-3 weeks, every now and then, I've been getting sharp pains right in the middle of my calf muscle. It feels as though something is giving me a good hard pinch. Up until today, it was only happening once or twice a day, and it was over with very quickly. Today, however, the pain has been a little worse, and the "pinches" have been happening more frequently. It almost feels like a muscle cramp or spasm, but I can't really seem to find a way to stretch the muscle that affects the pain in any way. It happens at all times of the day, and isn't affected by what I'm doing. I can be sitting, standing, walking, running, etc. when I feel the pain.

I panicked because I recently read someone else's post about a DVT, but after some research, I really don't think that's what I have. The area is not red, swollen, or warm, and I am pretty active and haven't been on any long trips lately.

I recently started "stepping up" my routine at the gym, and I have spent a lot of time wearing high heels lately. Is it possible that I may have pulled or strained the muscle? Although, if it was muscle strain, wouldn't the pain be more constant instead of the randomness I'm experiencing now?

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!!!

***Edited to add: Could it be nerve pain? I had surgery for a herniated disc about 4 years ago, and have had some mild lingering nerve pain off and on ever since then, although I haven't really had any in about a year. It doesn't really seem like the nerve pain I'm familiar with, though -- which was kind of achy. This new pain is really sharp and stabbing. Just wondering, though. Any ideas ???
