C90 Stock Exhaust Mod

I am a new owner of an 05 C90 and would like a bit louder exhaust. I might have to add aftermarket, but I like the size and looks of the stock pipes. I have read for hours on this forum, thought I found a post that stated that you could not modify the C90 stock exhaust; but I cannot seem to find it again.

The lower stock exhaust pipe appears to be different than the upper too. My question is this. Looking in each pipe you can see what looks like a plate some 14" back in the exhaust pipe. Can this plate be drilled out (will a very long bit) to enhance the sound of the the stock system?

If I go with aftermarket, I would like large diameter pipes with a deep rumble, but not so loud that my neighbor would object, and not too loud for my wife riding with me. I have read good and bad for most brands and just need to narrow it down. Are there some slip-ons that will provide the deep rumble and large diameter. Of course, reasonable price is important too.

Just look up debaffling on this site..if you pop into the M50 forum, there is a sticky on how to do it. I just got a C90 after trading up from an M50 and am planning to debaffle mine this week or next. Good luck!! And we need some pics.....
 
I did look up debaffling and that is why I found several posts that say things like: "the C90 mufflers are way different than C50" and " you can't debaffle C90".

By taking a good look at the bottom pipe on my bike, there is an odd shaped hole on the top of the bottom pipe, sort of triangular, 7" x about 2 1/2" a few inches from the back end of the pipe. This slot exposes what looks like some inner part of the baffle/muffler. There are also 2 2"x3/4" oval slots on the bottom of the bottom pipe. There are already 4 roughly 3/8 or 1/2 holes on the back end plate of the muffler. This means that I can stick my finger through any of the slots mentioned, and actually see my finger through the drilled holes in the back plate.

It seems that trying to debaffle the bottom pipe would mean that you would be opening it up so that the exhaust from the bottom pipe would be exiting through all of the slots.

I hope that did not sound too confusing, but wondered if you could look at your bike to see if it has the slots in the bottom pipe too.

If you get into debaffling this week end, you may want to start with the bottom pipe since that one my be the most difficult. Since the top one does not have any slots, it may work fine.

I'll have to get pics later. Recent surgery has limited my mobility a bit.

It is correct that you cannot debaffle a 90. Well you can but it will sound like A$$. All you gotta do is look at the idiot box in front of your rear tire and you will see why. It is an exhaust collector box, an integral pat of the exhaust system. Both pipes turn out into this box then turn back into the mufflers. You cannot compare an M50 with the C90. Completely different monster.

Go ahead and drill all the holes that you want. Then only result is that you will have ruined your stock exhaust and what you will have will sound like mega A$$. You will be much better off buying am exhaust. Get the look and sound that you want. Often there are used or slightly damaged pipes on ebay for cheap. HERE are some examples. Anything for an Intruder 1500 will fit the C90 just need longer exhaust studs. Also by going with am exhaust you will be rid of the collector box and this will give you the opportunity to put a G-tank in its place. Then you will probably want to get the Bully stage III. Save your stock exhaust for when it is illegal to run louder pipes. I plan on keeping mine since the laws are changing all over the U.S. now.

Wouldn't you rather your bike sound like THIS???

Thanks for the info. Your sideburners sound nice, but I am not sure if they would be too loud. Sound good in the video, but sound like they might make the neighbors mad. Are those straight through or do they have a baffle?

My riding is no more than a couple of hours at a time, so I can't see adding the g-tank and bully at this point - I just want a deeper exhaust sound. Since slip-ons are cheaper, would they still have a problem since that little 'idiot box' would still be in place with them?

i have a c90t and the only way i found to make it louder is aftermarket pipes, because of the collection box in front of the rear wheel its dam near impossible to alter the pipes.i went with the cobra dragsters and hate them.they come with 12 inch baffels and are loud when you open it up. im going to get the 15 inch baffels and see if it quiets down a little. and my stock pipes are packed in the cobra box for the day when the the lawman says they need to go back on...look around and see if you can find a 90 with after markets youy like before buying because there not cheap....
 
I'm on the fence about changing my pipes... I like the rumble they have now but sometimes I think that I'd like a little more of that... EXCEPT for when I'm on my way to work at 5:30 in the morning!! I like my neighbors and I think they like me!! Probably not so much if I woke them up at that hour
 
Thanks for the info on the Cobra's. The sound clips I found did seem to be pretty loud. I was looking at some of the Hard Chrome 3" Big straights. At least they would maintain some of the size and look of the existing pipes (which I like). I just wish there were a place to listen to some of these first hand. I am in NW Ohio and there are not many places around here where I can listen to various models of pipes.
 
It is fairly easy to moderate the volume on pipes, well mine anyway. Pretty quiet at idle and low cruising speeds. I leave for work at 10:30 p.m. and I pretty much crawl out of my hood. Just have to feather the clutch and throttle, easy out and little gas.
